Character Information
Name: Kohaku
Source Canon: Tsukihime
Age: Unstated in canon, older spectrum of teens. Some sources say 16-17.
Role In Canon: Kohaku is one of the more minor characters, but quite prominent. A maid in the Tohno household, she is just as much woven into the web of words and words that is Tsukihime as any other character... though she sadly gets a little less face time.
History: Her personal history is here and the game's general history is here.
Personality:
Kohaku is a bundle of problems and inner fears under the tight bounds of a smile. Kohaku holds an unyielding hate for the Tohno family for the torture she endured as a child, however, even with this being a factor in her life, when Kohaku learned of Hisui's reaction to this and her subsequent depression, Kohaku took on the mantle of smiling until Hisui would-- even though that nigh permanently changed their roles, making Hisui acting emotionless and Kohaku as bright as a pot of sunshine. While Kohaku retains plenty of those negative feelings, it seems she's found some balance with herself, if only some.
Kohaku acts cheerful and is a bit of a bumbling maid as opposed to Hisui's nigh-perfection. Though she still harbors intense feelings from her childhood, towards the main character and towards her past, she still works around the clock for the household. Compared to Akiha's scolding and Hisui's stiffness, Kohaku seemed to be the closest to 'down to earth' of the residents of the Tohno household when Shiki first arrived, doing things like letting him watch TV with her since it was the only one in her room, and so on. Kohaku's act is so conditioned that she seems to be living through it.
However, even if you adapt to some of the mask, there's still the mask itself to deal with. Kohaku killed her emotions to handle the pain of what she went through, eventually leading to the switch of personalities between the two sisters. Her heart is buried deep, deep inside of her and somewhat long forgotten, but moments of it show and at the end of her route, she seems to be handling herself the best she ever had. She can make switches of her personality at rare moments (like the end of her route, Hisui's route, so on) and her motivations, making her somewhat... hard to pin.
But on the exterior, and for people at the game to see, including castmates-- Kohaku will be cheerful and helpful, if confused. Somewhat scolding, trying to be a good caretaker, and just a little bit fiendish even when she isn't trying, Kohaku has a wily personality when she puts aside her pain. Though she claims at first to hate Shiki, she really does love him... though they only exchanged glances and her hair ribbon, asking for it back one day, Kohaku is definitely the type to take promises to heart. Even with her heart buried aside, Kohaku's story emphasizes how she killed those emotions, likening herself to a doll, wanting to be like one. After her past and the things she had to go through, feeling nothing felt better than feeling anything at all. While she wanted revenge against the Tohno family, it was more of a belief that it was a thing she wanted rather than something she truly believed in, and even so, she went after it with all of her ability.
The way Kohaku was used as a child lends clarity to this mindset-- how her abilities were abused along with her body, her only glances at outer life being that of her sister playing with Shiki, and their eyes occasionally meeting. A doll for revenge was easier than anything Kohaku was ever used as and made to be. Kohaku emphasizes her understanding of her (lack of) feelings, but when push comes to shove, so do her emotions into light. While Kohaku might have a perfect mask, she doesn't quite understand just what it is she's acting. The times when she understands when the two come together are rare and few between-- and take a lot of plot progression to even be touched.
Outwardly, you'll have a cheerful member of the community. Inwardly, you'll have a lost, emotionless girl, chasing after becoming a doll.
Abilities: Kohaku is descended from what is known as a Synchronizer, a being that is able to exchange their life energy via the exchange of bodily fluids with another human being. While she does not actively act on this (except in certain situations and in her past), she has the ability just the same. Kohaku is also extremely gifted with medicine, learned from a man named Jinan Sougen.
Sample: ... Aha, do you believe in bizarre miracles like this?
I know it isn't my place to be talking about miracles, but you see things like this in books and television every day. Someone is whisked away from the mundane of life into a new world. You follow their stories and companions until you hit the end and say goodbye... or the stories just never end. I know a few television shows like that, ahaha...! [ The person typing seems to be dealing with the situation rather nicely. ]
But you don't believe in it, because things like that simply do not happen.
Even if the fantastic exists in your world, the fantastic coming out to get you is a rare feat, isn't it? So instead of afraid, I feel lucky. You don't think that's strange, right? I may start my own story with strange friends along the way, and then there's a poetic ending to it all, calling to the way it started.
... eheh. I'd love to watch a television show like that all the way through one day.
My name is Kohaku. I serve the Tohno family.
So what is your name?
